Hatchet 3 is the 2013 horror film in the Hatchet series. It is a story about Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.
Its practical special effects are the film's greatest strength. In contrast to many contemporary horror films that heavily rely on CG effects, Hatchet 3 features mostly practical makeup effect and sets--resulting in some truly terrifying moments throughout the film.
The cast delivers a strong performance, with Kane Hodder being the most intimidating villain. The dialogue is reminiscent of an 1980s slasher (click now to read article) movie. It is witty and hilarious. Additionally, there are some genuinely funny moments throughout, which provide a comical contrast against all of the gut-wrenching action on screen.
Due to the small budget (1 million dollars) most of the locations are duplicates of previous films. The boat house in Hatchet 2 was only used once and the remainder of the footage seems like it's been duplicated from earlier films. Hatchet or Hatchet2 may feel it's a familiar film.
Overall, I enjoyed Hatchet 3 even though it was very similar to previous entries in this series--it offered plenty of gory thrills and entertaining performances from its cast members.
